BAFW Maison Maison

The 6th BERLIN ALTERNATIVE FASHION WEEK is over, with 10.000 visitors attending the 15 runway shows, the design market and CHRISTEENE’s absolutely stunning closing performance at Halle am Berghain.

Maison Mason’s collection BODYDISMORPHIA was one of the undisputed highlights among audience and critics alike, and I had a great time opening Patrick’s show. You can watch the official video of the full runway show and read a selection of reviews below.

The final show, created by the young Berlin-based designer Patrick Mason, was opened by a fascinating dance performance supported by electronic background sounds. Maison Mason’s collection demonstrated an interesting mix of asymmetric patterns and layering fabrics. The models presented extraordinary silhouettes characterized by graphical prepared designs and straight cut trousers. Matching the impressive and unique location, Maison Mason’s show enhanced the event in an artful and creative way.

There was something special about the way the borderline deafening music filled the post-industrial hall with its majestic high ceilings and some remnants of the heating plant it used to be. Especially the show of Maison Mason felt like a tribute to Berghain’s unique essence. Accompanied by the projection of a sinister gothic church interior that brought to mind the religious way Berghain is being worshipped by its visitors, it commenced with a thrilling dance performance that impressed probably all audience members, including internationally famed singer Peaches that we briefly chatted with during the break. The Maison Mason show went on, presenting intriguing contemporary designs on bold and brazen models that would all remain on stage till the end, dancing all close to each other to the spellbinding music, forming a hot crowd similar to the ones that usually occupy Berghain’s floors.

2016年、BAFW に彗星のごとく現れたベルリンの若手注目株。デザイナーのパトリック・メイソン (Patrick Mason) は、ベルリン・NYを拠点に世界中のストリートファッション＆トレンドを紹介するオンラインマガジン Highsnobiety 2017年の注目すべきインフルエンサーにも選出されるアイコン的存在である。エスニックカルチャーとモダン・ストリートスタイルの融合を得意とする彼の第３作目となる今シーズンのテーマは BODYDISMORPHIA。身体醜形障害、醜形恐怖症に着目し、違和感を覚えるルックスと奇形をテーマにコレクションを制作。美しいピンストライプのブレザーに不自然なボリュームのエルボーを加えるなど、あえて魅力的なものに欠陥を与えた10スタイリングを発表した。まるで映画のワンシーンのようなコンテンポラリーダンサーによるパフォーマンスで幕を開け、＜ベルグハイン＞のレジデンスDJである Radioslave のミックスとともにモデルたちが颯爽と現れる。ランウェイを終えたモデルたちは群れをなし、各々踊るその光景は、まさに＜ベルグハイン＞のフロアを彷彿とさせた。アフロ・アメリカン、ラテン、白人、アジア、アラビアと、人種・性別を超えたキャスティングからも訴えかける、まさに全人類の多様性を祝福すべく生まれたコレクションなのだ。
