The dance group, which Gregor Zöllig consistently integrates into his concepts, impressed with its subtle expressiveness, athletic solos, rich character constellations, and theatrical versatility—once again, a compelling testament to the excellence of the newly formed ensemble. The premiere audience was, quite rightly, absolutely thrilled.
Zöllig’s perspective on a joyless monotony of competition, superficial appearances, and fleeting encounters culminates in moments of disruption. [...] The only real chance to resist the pressure to keep up lies in the human factor: imperfection, individuality, and creativity. The audience, responding with enthusiastic applause throughout and a resounding ovation at the end, left enriched by a humorous yet profound reflection on the theme.
In Stadt.Stolper.Steine, the director of the Bielefeld Dance Theater presents a thorough critique of society’s moral complexities. [...] The piece [...] offers even more than expected. So much, in fact, that one must remain mentally agile to keep up with the choreographer’s reflections as they navigate the jungle of social critique. Not the worst challenge a dance piece could pose to its audience.
Stadt.Stolper.Steine made a strong impression. [...] Like a kaleidoscope, Zöllig and his outstanding dance ensemble depict characteristic conditions of the modern Western world. It is to their credit that they create images that are both sharp and humorous. [...] The premiere audience was thoroughly thrilled and rewarded the performance with prolonged applause.
